Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, Champlain Pkwy, #1B, #1 (green) (#2 - #24), Glide Wax: CH7, Grip Wax:

Skated from P10 up the Fortune Pkwy, which had been freshly groomed (probably this afternoon). The snow was like granular sugar, giving good glide and excellent control. I had been planning to turn west on Ridge Road, but this had not been groomed in days and was very hard. I therefore continued up the parkways to the Champlain lookout. To my considerable surprise the grooming continued west along 1B (watch for the exposed rock on the first downhill) and then along 1. I turned around at the intersection with the Blanchet hiking trail, but the grooming continued, probably to the Fire Tower. This far out there were perhaps half a dozen sets of tracks in the newly groomed skate lane. 24 had not been groomed. 1A and 2 from Ridge to Western were freshly groomed. The Champlain Pkwy east of Fortune had also been groomed. Conditions were very good to excellent on all the groomed sections. Tomorrow should provide great skiing in this sector on the groomed trails, even if no more work is done tonight (and frankly I don't expect more to be done).

It's worth noting that when I set out the NCC site had no mention of recent grooming on any of these trails. Fortunately I took a chance and went anyway. It seems Demsis often grooms on Friday even if the work is not reported.

Yesterday evening I did a couple of skate passes of the Doldrums, which at that time had not been groomed for (I would guess) several days and were very hard and somewhat icy. A racer might have liked the hard surface, but I would have appreciated something a bit softer for more control.
