Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, #1, #1B, #2 (blue), Glide Wax: Vauhti green, Grip Wax:

Short skate ski today from P10 to Western Lodge. The Park must have got more snow last night than we got in town as conditions were really nice on the groomed runs. Most of the trails I was on had been worked hard for the Loppet on the weekend. Skiing yesterday the conditions were groomed hard, granular and icy after last weeks thaw - fast and easy glide. Today it was groomed with fresh, cold, dry snow that was a little soft. Even the trails that hadn't yet seen the groomer appeared like they might be skiable with this fresh layer of snow on top. Ridge road was nice. Even the Khyber pass had sufficient snow to make the descent fun. There was a rock or two visible on the descent beyond Huron but they were easy to avoid.

Trail 2 from Ridge down to Western hadn't seen the groomer when we went down and, while somewhat choppy, was still skiable. Last steep pitch has been flagged across the trail to advise taking the skis off and walking down to the hut. It's a sheet of ice so even walking down was a challenge. After our break we walked back up the first pitch and were met by the groomer who was out working the trails so fresh tracks for the climb back to Ridge. Burma hadn't seen a groomer yet but I suspect that was where the groomer we saw was heading next so perhaps it will be in good shape tomorrow. Didn't venture onto any backcountry trails but the conditions almost looked like crust cruising would be possible... almost. I tried at one spot and quickly broke through the crust so not quite the right conditions for that.

All in all the primary trails are looking quite good after Fridays foray into spring. Hopefully more snow is on its way so we can get the rest of the trail network tuned up for one more stretch before spring comes to stay.
