Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: #50, #53, Glide Wax: blue, Grip Wax:

Skied out of P19 today. When I arrived there were a couple of parking spaces in the lower parking lot. By the time I got back the cars were starting to line up along the road... but I expect the upper parking was probably not too busy.

Skied 50 to the end of the lake where the grooming stopped. As far as I went was nice skiing with a few hazards along the way. Hard base that was fast/icy but the groomer left enough of a surface to maintain control. Didn't ski out 55 to Renaud and Taylor but it looked good also. One or two spots along 50 had flooded over the trail and then refroze after yesterdays big melt. You could deke around them on the crust on the side of the trail so no problem there. There was also one large log across the trail (near the end of the lake) which must have fallen after the groomer went past (again, it was easy to sidle past on one side). The grooming stopped at the end of the lake and I only ventured a few hundred feet beyond on the ungroomed trail. it was bullet proof ice and not much fun to be on. Things might have improved if I got a little further into some sunny stretches but I decided to turned back.

Made a little detour out 53 from P19 before I stopped for the day. After a short walk from the parking lot(on mud and ice) I found a nicely groomed lane. Sadly it only went down the first hill on 53 before the groomer turned around and went back. The first bog had also flooded and partially refrozen so I guess they didn't want to lose the machine in the bog and turned back. I tried to crust cruise around to the nearby fields but kept getting stymied by thick brush and wasn't able to make my way through to the open fields. Headed back to the car to call it a day.

All in all things were quite good considering the hot weather yesterday and then flash freeze. I figure I saw maybe 50% skaters, 25% classic skiers and 25% walkers. Sadly no campers as they've shut down the tents/yurts for (most likely)the season. A little fresh snow on Monday? Yes please.
