Lovely day for a classic or skate ski. Both P7 lots were filling up fast when we arrived at around 12:30PM. We classic skied to Keogan via 30 and 1. There were many skaters also enjoying the great conditions. Two rescue snowmobiles passed us, heading in the opposite direction. These created unpleasant grooves in the trail, but nothing too extreme. Ridge was in excellent shape on the way to Keogan. The snow was hard, and there were a few leaves. The grooming was also excellent and nothing was too scraped, yet. For our return, we took a meandering route consisting of 1-4-22-34-19-back on 1-30. (We were sans toddler, and I was feeling "adventurous.") On the way back, the going was not so easy. Many skiers before us made the trails easy to follow, in principle. The surface of the snow was crusted over and there was a carpet of leaf and twig debris to negotiate. Descents were difficult and required some strategic falling in places or sidestepping to avoid wrapping oneself around a tree. The biggest danger was the leaves sticking to the bottom of the skis during a descent. We made much use of the edges of our skis to stay safe. Despite our difficulties, it felt amazing to emerge from the forest unharmed and sweaty. Am definitely going to wait for a good dump of fresh, soft snow before attempting the backwoods again. High skier traffic made for a more scraped return to P7.
