Trails Skied: #50, #54 (green), #55 (green - shared), Glide Wax: don't think it mattered too much..., Grip Wax:

Skied out of P19 today on a lovely spring skiing day. Skied 50 - 55 - 54 up to Lusk cabin and then back to 55 and out to Taylor lake before returning along 50 to ski a ways south before finally returning to the car. Started a little late but conditions were pretty good regardless. Trail 50 had been groomed this morning and was a little soft when I got to it but pretty nice skiing regardless. 55 and 54 had not been groomed but in the warm sun the top layer had softened nicely and the skating was excellent. The climb up to Lusk cabin had a number of icy patches which were well marked with flagging. For the most part they were softening in the sun but the particularly steep pitch half way up is well shaded with trees and remained icy. Worst case you could walk up/down but I skied on the snowbank with good success. The deck at Lusk cabin is in excellent shape and I partook of it for some time feeding the local "landlords" and enjoying the warm sunshine.

Finally dragged myself back to the skiing and went out to Taylor lake. The main trail to the lake is fine but the trail along Taylor to the yurt is starting to show signs of gravel. No surprise I guess as it faces due south and the sun is working hard along there. I was still able to ski out to the yurt but it won't be long before you'll have to walk that stretch. By the time I got back to trail 50 it was late in the day. The shady spots were still quite nice but sunny stretches the base had been churned into a mashed potatoe consistency. Slow going back to the car but then again I wasn't in a rush...

As others have noted, lots of snow. I would wager next weekend there might be some short portages opening up in predictably sunny spots but still some good skiing to be had. Two weeks? Only the weather gods know for sure.
