Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: #32, Camp Fortune Race Course, #32, Glide Wax: no-wax fishscale, Grip Wax:

I climbed up from the "wrong" end of P10 and the trail was lightly covered in powder over a hard base that I suspect was compacted by snowshoes. It was actually pretty good.

Where trail 32 comes to Fortune lake the trail conditions changed as seen in photo. There was evidence of boot prints, skis from the warm weather Friday and snowshoes here and there. Thus the Lake Trail was a tricky run. Not so bad that I didn't take it back though. I recommend keeping to the side where the crust is hard enough to keep you on top but where you don't have to deal with the clatter of all those ruts and holes (at least until we get more snow).

I then looped the outside of the Camp Fortune Race trail. I was actually trying to visualize the old trails that descended thru here. This trail was in good shape having hardened after a grooming and then gotten almost an inch of powder. I was the first over it. I apologize to skaters since I was in my waxless back country skis but at least I pulled a bunch of small logs off the trail that had blown down in the windy weather over the weekend.

I think this racing loop is an underutilized resource, the trail is so great.

Actually I wasn't the first on the trail as you can see from the second picture. A fun-loving otter had come sliding down from the little lake on the other side of Ridge Road, via Merry-Go-Round (#11), partly the race trail, then cross non-trail country toward Fortune lake.
