Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Champlain Pkwy, #1 Penguin Climb, #1, Champlain Pkwy, Glide Wax: CH6, Grip Wax:

Climbed Penguin from P5, went west on Ridge to the Champlain lookout, then returned via the Champlain parkway past Black Lake. The Parkways have all been properly groomed, with two classic tracks each side and a skate lane extending right out to the classic tracks. Of course the skate lane was still a bit soft, with all the fresh new snow. As I climbed Penguin I met two snowmobiles descending, apparently returning from grooming Ridge. One was setting classic tracks with a drag, the other smoothing the skate lane. Without heavy equipment grooming Ridge, the skate lane is very uneven and bumpy, particularly between Huron and the Champlain lookout. There are a few exposed rocks in this section. The snowmobile-set classic tracks don't appear to be able to sustain the high skier traffic on Ridge; the tracks were pretty badly washed out much of the way (see photo). No work of any kind had been done on Burma (photo). The snowmobile track setting appeared to extend along 1B. Snowplowing skiers have already exposed large patches of ice at the sharp corner in the Khyber pass. The ditch at the edge of the trail in the pass still hasn't filled in with snow, so there isn't a lot of room for ascending and descending skiers to pass each other. As one would expect the area around the Ridge/Fortune intersection was crowded with skiers by 10AM, but there weren't many skiers on the Champlain parkway in the Black Lake zone. All in all it's a great day for skiing. Despite the -15C air temperature it didn't feel really cold. Get out and enjoy the afternoon sun if you can!
