Left half-full P12 around 09:30, air temp +2C. The climb up FLP was surprisingly easy and nice and fast, thanks to the hairies. Skate skiers were flying by; not too many people on classics. Snow conditions were as expected: hard and icy, with classic tracks lacking in depth in some areas, dirty in other areas, and intermittently disappearing. The ski up Khyber past Shilly Shally was not too bad, but the descent looked too dicy for my liking with lots of ice on the right-hand downhill skate ski area. Return from Huron Shelter via Champlain was pleasant all the way to FLP and the run down FLP was fast and easy until just past Fortune Lake, where I decided to exit the classic tracks and stay on the skate area for pretty much all of the descent. Overall, very enjoyable despite non-ideal conditions for classic.
Gatineau Park is ski paradise! The network of ski trails offer machine groomed skate skiing and classic skiing as well as little groomed backcountry trails. Multiple access points allow skiers to access a variety of terrain and scenery. The NCC offers season or daily pay rates.
