Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, Champlain Pkwy, #1, #1 (green) (#2 - #24), #1 (blue), Glide Wax: blue, Grip Wax:

Left work a little early (but not too early as it stays light pretty late!) to get a ski in while it was still cold... and then home before the curfew kicked in. There was still some space at P10 when I got there so I grabbed a spot. Air temp was ~0°C but the snow was mostly hard packed with enough "texture" on the surface to hold an edge. Made for fast skiing but controllable when you needed it. Skied to the lookouts and then out along Ridge. Made fast work of it so kept going all the way to the firetower.

The track had been recently groomed (not sure when) so was pretty good most of the way out. A couple of icy spots here and there and a few spots that are in the direct sun had slushed up a bit during the day but were starting to refreeze as the sun set. Someone had mentioned that the bottom of the last steep pitch up to the Wolf trail has turned to gravel(photo). True enough but there was just enough room around the edge to by pass the gravel when climbing. I managed to ski around it on the way down but it was none to graceful. Wiser people appeared to be walking down that pitch which is probably the better choice. Beyond the Wolf bench the skiing was excellent. Lighter traffic meant there was still some corduroy to be had and the steep climbs were a little more bearable on the icy base.

This report is probably only useful for the early birds over the next few days. As the temperatures start to climb (soar?!) through the day and the hard icy snow will soften pretty rapidly. The easy kms will start to be progressively more hard fought - but at least the day will be nice!
