Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, #1, #1B, Glide Wax: CH7, Grip Wax:

Grooming today in the central section of the park was the reverse of yesterday- Ridge Road and Burma were groomed but the parkways were not. I skated up the FLP then east on Ridge to the top of Penguin, then west on Ridge up the Khyber Pass to 1B, returning via 1A. The FLP was skied flat and a bit skittery, and the classic tracks were slightly glazed. Ridge offered perfect fresh corduroy and fresh classic tracks. 1B was a delight. I didn't try Burma, but it looked to be in great shape. The groomers have filled in the ditches in the Khyber Pass, creating a wide flat snowy surface through the tight corner. This was a good thing, since I encountered a long line of ascending skiers when I turned the corner!

Today I discovered something I should have figured out long ago- on a clear night the snow surface radiates heat and can become quite cold, even if the air temperature is relatively high. My purple glide wax felt very sticky and glide was minimal until about half way through the trip, when the snow temperature finally caught up with the air temperature. Yesterday with the same air temperature and same wax I had great glide throughout my trip- but yesterday night was cloudy.

As expected P10 was filling up by 9AM, and was jammed by 11AM. Given the fantastic ski conditions, it's easy to see why!
