Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, Champlain Pkwy, #1, Champlain Pkwy, Glide Wax: CH8 with rilling, Grip Wax:

Skate conditions ranged from fair to excellent today on the upper parkways. I got the very last parking spot in P10 at 8:30AM, and ascended the FP to the T intersection. It was hard to believe this section had been groomed- even at 9AM the snow had been churned into lumpy mashed potatoes by the skiing hordes. However the surface was still soft and forgiving, and glide was surprisingly good with the air temperature just above freezing. At the T I turned east and followed the CP to Black Lake. Here the grooming was definitely fresh. The snow was actually a bit slower here, but it was nice to have smooth fresh corduroy. This section was by far the nicest I encountered today, and also the least crowded. Turning back to the west, I followed the CP to the Champlain Lookout. Past the Huron Lookout the surface turned to chopped up ice, and beneath the Etienne Brule lookout there was an unskiable 50m section of wet smooth ice. From the Champlain Lookout I returned to Huron shelter on Ridge Road. Ridge had been heavily skied, but was still pleasant. Dirt and debris was starting to show in the snow under the pine trees. At Huron I stopped to watch a huge congregation of birds at the feeder. From Huron I retraced my route on the parkways to P10. Overall it was a very worthwhile ski. Usually the best bet for late spring skiing is to stay on the north slopes and go high on the ridge, where there is still snow. With the abundant snow still on the ground this year the best skating seems to be on the GP and CP between P5 and the T. This suggests using P5 or P6 as a starting point rather than battling the crowds at P10.
