Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: #50, #54 (green), #55 (green - shared), Glide Wax: CH7, Grip Wax:

I left P16 at 9:30 and skated 50 to the 55 junction, then took 55 to 54 to Lusk Cabin, returned and followed 55 to Taylor Lake, turned, stopped for a lunch break at Renaud Cabin, then took 50 back to P16. There had been fresh grooming overnight, but the thaw yesterday resulted in a sugary, granular surface. There had been about 1cm of fresh snow in the park last night which help provide a bit of softness to the surface, particularly in the classic tracks. Strong winds had left a huge amount of leaves and twigs on the trail, and in places even my skate skis stalled on the leaves. I'm sure leaves in the track would have posed a much bigger problem for grip wax on classic skis. The groomed surface provided good glide and control until near the very end of the trip, when skier traffic compressed the surface to the point my edges and even pole tips skittered out in places. The wind was so strong deep snowdrifts had formed across 50 at the Lac Philippe crossing. I saw a very large group of young snowshoers (probably a church or school group) hiking up the 54 road towards Lusk Cabin. I hope their leaders pay a bit more attention to using the proper snowshoe trails in the future. Apart from damage to the tracks, it is dangerous to have walkers in the middle of the trail on steep, fast downhills. Based on the number of classic skiers I saw skiing out of the tracks, I suspect grip wax was wearing off quickly in the abrasive snow. The final descent to P16 was downright scary. Skier traffic had removed almost all the snow from the surface, leaving long swathes of glare ice. I had essentially no control on the approach to the bridge. Overall it was a good ski, but there were enough negatives that I can't give a 5-star rating.
