Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Gatineau Pkwy , Gatineau Pkwy, Champlain Pkwy, Glide Wax: CH8, Grip Wax:

I found very good skate conditions this morning on a return trip from P8 to Mulvihill Lake. The snow has almost completely transformed to wet granular, and was soft enough to hold an edge but still gave very good glide on all but the sunniest sections. A friend I encountered at P8 reported remarkable skating earlier in the morning on the Doldrums when the surface was a bit firmer. Coverage was complete, but the groomer had dragged dirt onto the skate lane between P8 to the beaver pond, and this short section will break through soon as the sun beats down on the black dirt. The classic tracks were a bit shallow (not surprisingly) but still usable in most places. The usual hitting-the-brakes suction effect was apparent on moving from shade to full sun on the descents. I highly recommend rilling your ski bases. I didn't see many other skiers out, which is a bit sad since it is still well worth skiing, and indeed worth the drive from Ottawa. Grab it while you can, bike season will be here soon enough!
