Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, #1, #1B, #2 (blue), Glide Wax: CH8, Grip Wax:

As the sun transforms the snow and grooming continues every night, the skate skiing in Gatineau Park just keeps getting better! Today I did a quick cruise of the central section of Ridge Road, starting from P10, ascending the FP, then heading west on Ridge and 1B to the intersection with 2, down 2 to the hill just above Western, then back along Ridge to the crest above Penguin, and finally returning via Ridge and the FP. For scenery, these are some of my favorite trails. The surface was soft enough to give perfect control, but it felt like I had rocket skis with effortless glide (in fact I have 15 year old skis that could have used some fresh wax...). The only minor negative was that grooming stopped on the hill just above Western (see photo). I didn't bother to descend the last 100m to the cabin, but in view of the cones and tape visible down the hill below me, I think I would have walked if I'd decided to go down. As others have noted, the groomer used on Ridge seems to be having some minor mechanical problems, and in places there are ridges of snow in the skate lane. They are easily avoided, and nothing to worry about. The classic tracks were nicely formed and offered fast, effortless descents, but weren't icy. The classic skiers I saw seemed to be getting good grip. With perfect snow conditions combined with sunshine, no wind, and temperatures just below freezing, it was a six-star day. I didn't see many other skiers, but P10 was nearly full when I departed. Get out and ski if you possibly can, it really doesn't get any better than this!
