Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: #1 Penguin Climb, #6, #22, #34, Glide Wax: , Grip Wax: Waxless

Not a typical ski for me but one of the most enjoyable skis of the year. I finally felt the conditions were snowy enough for me to try my new back country waxless skis - all by myself. The climb up Penguin was a workout and a half as the skis felt like heavy rocks compared to my usual light skis. (An elf danced by me on classic skis.) It's a bit embarrassing to hear the sound of the fish scales on groomed snow, however once I hit Skyline the skis came into their own. They floated on the fresh snow - still powdery at this time of the morning. The downhills were a pleasure rather than a near death experience as they sometimes have felt on Skyline with skinny skis. This was the slowest ski I can remember, and quite tiring, and I had to stop to eat several times, which I don't normally do. The slowness added to the experience. There was time to savour all those snowy fir trees and to relish the new muscles that were making themselves known. Except for the last 15 minutes I met only two other skiers. Next time I might bring a camp chair and just hang out for a while. My only regret was that I didn't have time to do all of trail 22. I'm too tired to post photos at the moment, and hope I can stay awake for my students this afternoon. I will hopefully be alert enough to post them on my blog soon, hopefully.
