Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Fortune Pkwy, #1, Champlain Pkwy, #14, Camp Fortune Race Course, Glide Wax: violet, Grip Wax:

Skied out of P7 this morning. Excellent fresh grooming on 30 and Ridge road. Interestingly they had not groomed the short steep shoot at Wattsford lookout (up to 31). Not sure if this was intentional (as its getting thin and icy and they'd be pulling up gravel if they tilled too deep) or just a quirk of the paths the groomers took this morning. I skied up it okay on some light, fresh snow but descending would have been.... swift. As it was, 31 (the back way down to P7) was perfectly groomed so I went down that when I came back.

I also took a detour onto the Fortune Practice loop. It hasn't been groomed in a week or 10 days but todays conditions were perfect. There was a hard base under 2 or 3 cm of nice, fresh powder. Made for easy skiing on a fun loop. I was a little concerned on a couple of the steep descents for fear I might get all the ice and no powder... but it didn't work out that way so all was good. There were a few bare patches on the course which were easy - as a skier - to avoid. I'd expect they won't groom these tracks again until (if) we get another layer of snow.

After a lap of the practice course I went out on Ridge and skied a bit of the parkways before heading back. I looked at a few of the backcountry trails. They looked skiable for the adventurous(and some had) with the fresh powder over a hard base... but I would think the steep descents might be swept clean of the powder after only a few skiers.

I also tried a bit of crust cruising but kept finding patches of open water on a few of my favourite bogs and swamps so it made it difficult to link anything together. More snow in the forecast so hopefully the backcountry trails aren't done for the season.
