Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: #2 (blue), #33, #40, #21, Glide Wax: , Grip Wax:

A sunny day with not much wind - might as well try the skiing. The groomed hills, 40, 33, and 2, were hard and fast. There were many leaves in the tracks which were hard to avoid. Backcountry, as experienced by the short stretch of 21 between 33 and 2, is dangerous. There is a centimetre of snow on top of the crust which can give you grip on the flats. Climbing hills is a great idea for breaking the crust. Descending unbroken hills? - too dangerous. The crust is not strong enough to be reliable and your skis and pole baskets will get stuck, and stop you quickly (or part of you). I sidestepped down the steeper bit of 21 to start chewing up the crust. More skier traffic or more snow should resolve this.
