Gatineau Park

Trails Skied: Champlain Pkwy, MacKenzie-King Rd , Glide Wax: , Grip Wax: Vaughti Green

Conditions were so variable this morning that I am doing two reports. I made the mistake of hastily glancing at the NCC grooming report and thought all the parkways were groomed for classic. My bad! They now list the skating first and it was only the skate area that was retouched on the parkways near Kingsmere. When classic is marked groomed you can safely assume the skate lane has also been done, but not the reverse. Anyway, it was less than inspiring - icy, hard and often filled with leaves. For sure a younger, racier type with great joints, no previous injuries and a love of noisy speed would have had a wonderful time bobsledding down the tracks. And in case you think that Kingsmere is deserted on a Thursday and that no one will notice - the parking lot had 30 cars by 11:00, when I finished my alternate ski. Having talked with a few on the trail, I know that this was Women on Skis and that they are neither young racers. They generally go classic and from the conversation I had with some of them two thirds of the group used the parkways. I don't like this piecemeal way of grooming. Do all the parkways at one time, and Ridge Road as well. This is basic.

Gatineau Park is ski paradise! The network of ski trails offer machine groomed skate skiing and classic skiing as well as little groomed backcountry trails. Multiple access points allow skiers to access a variety of terrain and scenery. The NCC offers season or daily pay rates.
